Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) in Baltimore, MD

Excessive eyelid skin or bags under your eyes can give you a tired or aged appearance. Blepharoplasty can be performed to restore a youthful, refreshed look by treating the redundant or baggy tissue. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Samuel Hahn of the Maryland Center for Facial Plastic Surgery performs blepharoplasty for patients throughout the Baltimore, Towson, Columbia, and surrounding communities looking to restore a refreshed, youthful appearance.

What is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, often referred to as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to rejuvenate the eyes by removing or repositioning excess eyelid skin and soft tissue. This can be performed for both functional (e.g. vision impairment) as well as aesthetic reasons.

Upper lid blepharoplasty is performed to freshen the appearance of the eyes by addressing the excess skin and bulging fat that often hoods over the eyelashes leading to a tired, aged appearance. When this procedure is done properly, the eyes appear more alert, rested, and youthful. This procedure is often combined with a brow lift or forehead lift procedure to enhance the rejuvenation around the eyes.

Upper Lid Blepharoplasty – Case 1

Lower lid blepharoplasty is performed to treat bags and loose skin under eyes. The bags under the eyes are usually caused by pseudoherniation of fat and are accentuated by the loss of volume around the upper cheek. Lower lid blepharoplasty removes and repositions the lower lid fat to provide a smooth, youthful transition along the lower lid. Additional skin tightening treatments are often performed along with the lower eyelid surgery to further smooth any wrinkles.

What are the Benefits of a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty can be performed to rejuvenate the eyes. Eyelid surgery can offer the following benefits:

  • Lead to a more youthful and refreshed appearance of the eyes
  • Remove bags under the eyes
  • Alleviate impaired vision due to excessive eyelid skin

Asian Eyelid Surgery

Asian eyelid surgery or “double eyelid surgery” is a procedure performed to create the supratarsal crease in the upper eyelid. This procedure can make the eyes appear more open and can also make it easier to apply eyeshadow and make the eyes look less tired.

Non-Surgical Eyelid Rejuvenation

Many patients would like to treat their tired appearing eyes but with to proceed with a conservative approach to correct these concerns. With the advent of Botox® and dermal fillers like Juvaderm® and Restylane® there are many options to help reduce wrinkles, fill in hollows, or redistribute volume to provide an alert, awake, youthful appearance to the eye region. These types of treatments offer an alternative method of treating your eyes.

How is a Blepharoplasty Performed?

In upper lid blepharoplasty, excess skin along the upper lids are carefully marked and removed through meticulous incisions involving the natural upper lid crease line. Through the incision, additional sculpting of excess fat can be performed. Lower lid blepharoplasty is performed through an incision hidden inside the lower lid. This technique helps minimize potential retraction and scarring of the lower lid compared to an external incision. Through this incision, excess fat can be removed or transposed to fill in and smoothen any hollowness along the tear trough or lid-cheek junction. In cases of excess lower lid skin, a small amount of skin may be excised to better contour the lower lids.
